Introduction

Tavex is pleased to present the second edition of the Royal Tudor Beasts collection, The Yale of Beaufort 2023. The Royal Tudor Beasts collection is inspired by the ten stone beasts that line the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, a symbol of Henry VIII's union with his third wife, Jane Seymour. The second of these majestic guardians featured in the bullion series is the awe-inspiring Yale of Beaufort.

What is the Yale of Beaufort?
The ‘Yale’ symbolises grace and elegance, or defence and determination. The mythical beast was originally found in European mythology before passing into medieval bestiaries and heraldry legends. Most descriptions make it an antelope (or goat-like) four-legged creature with the tusks of a boar and large horns that can swivel in any direction.

The Yale of Beaufort is described as: “The size of a hippopotamus, with an elephant’s tail, of a black or tawny colour, with the jaws of a boar and movable horns more than a cubit in length” – Pliny the Elder from Natural History.

The Yale’s connection to the British monarchy apparently began with Henry VII in 1485. He came from the House of Beaufort, an old noble English family. Henry’s mother, Lady Margaret, began the Beaufort heraldic symbol legacy. The Yale of Beaufort was one of the Queen’s official ten heraldic beasts commissioned for her coronation in 1953. As Queen Jane had no direct link to Beaufort heraldry, Henry VIII likely transferred the Yale of Beaufort to his new wife. It is presented on the moat Bridge in Hampton Court, holding the Arms of Jane Seymour to reinforce her authority and influence as the king’s new wife.

The Royal Mint is one of the oldest and most respected government institutions of Great Britain. Its long operating history, by some estimates over 1100 years, and coupled with its production of many of the world’s most famous coins, like the gold sovereign, has contributed to making it one of the best known and renowned mints in the world. Since 1279 when the mint established its operation in the Tower of London, it has been responsible for the production of coins of the United Kingdom. Its reputation for excellence and trust was further reinforced when Sir Isaac Newton became Master of the Royal Mint. During his tenure at the Royal Mint, he was responsible for moving the British pound to the gold standard.

Today the Royal Mint is not only responsible for minting coins used for circulation in the UK, but is likewise producing official coinage for more than 60 countries in the world. However, the most important and renowned coin ever to come out of its minting presses has without doubt been the sovereign gold coin which even today is being produced at its minting facility in the town of Llantrisant, Wales, UK. The accuracy and quality of the modern gold sovereign coin is the same as it was two hundred years ago, containing 22 karats of fine gold and weighing exactly 7.98805 grams. The popularity of the gold sovereign has likewise not changed, as confirmed in 2014 when the Royal Mint ran out of 2014 sovereign gold coins due to exceptional demand. The gold sovereign is without doubt one of the foremost gold coins ever to be produced and the fact that almost 100,000,000 sovereigns gold coins have been minted since 1957 is a testament to their excellence and trustworthiness. The reputation of the gold sovereign coin as “the chief coin of the world” will live on for centuries, as savvy investors will always prefer to keep a portion of their wealth in gold coins which are secure, liquid and trustworthy.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the fifth coin portrait of Her Majesty The Queen by Jody Clark. Also inscribed is the denomination "100 Pounds" and the text "Elizabeth II · D · G · REG · F · D".

Reverse

The stunning coin design features the Yale of Beaufort rearing up on his hind legs. Its front legs hold a shield of the Arms of Jane Seymour. The sideways look of the beast clearly shows its power and ferociousness. Its spotted body makes for a great raised texture and a semi-angry look, with tusks and horns poised on either side of its head.

Around the border of the gold coins is the inscription ‘YALE OF BEAUFORT’ along with the coin’s purity and weight. The design includes security features, as the background behind the lion is formed of radical lines.
